Major Hugues

Major Hugues is a painter based in Pennsylvania, United States.
Hugues began his formal training under his first mentor, Mark Heid. After years of study with Heid, he moved to California to attend the Laguna College of Art and Design (LCAD). While there, he focused on historical painting techniques.
Major’s work applies this craftsmanship to contemporary subjects, such as religion, myth, and ethics. He prepares his own materials, including washing and refining his oil, grinding his own paint, and making his mediums. He views portraiture as a means to reveal a person's true nature, not just to record their likeness. His goal is to create work that communicates across cultures through skilled technique.

Major Hugues was in residence at Very Private Gallery in November 2025.
